Vehicles Transporting Racing Shells

To process racing shells, a light bar (seen below) is now used in addition to or in place of traditional fluorescent warning flags. The light bar can be mounted on the vehicle's overhang, eliminating the need for a Special Hauling Permit. However, a Special Hauling Permit will be required if the total length of the vehicle combination exceeds 65 feet.

Without a light-bar Racing shells will be processed as an over dimensional vehicle.

The guidelines for processing these vehicles are as follows:

  • If the total length of the vehicle is over 65' up to 79'11"
    • a special hauling permit is required
    • a fluorescent flag must be attached to the overhang
    • warning signs must be posted on the front and rear of the vehicle
  • If the total length of the vehicle is 80' or greater
    • a special hauling permit is required
    • a fluorescent flag must be attached to the overhang
    • warning signs must be posted on the front and rear of the vehicle
    • a NYS certified escort vehicle is required
  • If the vehicle has an overhang of 4' or greater in the front or back of the vehicle (regardless of the overall length)
    • a special hauling permit is required
    • a fluorescent flag must be attached to the overhang
  • If the vehicle has an overhang of 10' or greater
    • a special hauling permit is required
    • a fluorescent flag must be attached to the overhang
    • a NYS certified escort vehicle is required

Note: Rear overhang may not exceed 1/3 the length of the load, so 2/3 of load must rest upon the truck and/or trailer bed.
