Electric Vehicles
The Thruway Authority is creating an expansive network of electric vehicle charging stations, which is key to increasing the use of zero-emission electric vehicles. Because of the Thruway’s ongoing investments in EV infrastructure, there are currently 40 EV charging stations in operation at Thruway commuter lots, select service areas, and Welcome Centers. In addition, as part of the on-going Service Area Redesign and Redevelopment Project, Empire State Thruway Partners will be installing at least two high-level EV charging stations at each Thruway service area by the end of 2025. Our goal is to create a robust, end-to-end corridor of more than 120 fast charging EV stations with an average of 30 miles between each location system wide.
Level 2 and Level 3 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are available along the New York State Thruway.
- Level 2 stations take approximately 4 hours to charge and are free to use.
- Level 3 stations are capable of supplying 50-100 kilowatts of power and enable fast-charge-capable EVs to be powered in approximately 30 minutes.
