THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES START OF $8.2 MILLION BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT OVER I-90 IN ONONDAGA COUNTY

Interchange 35 Bridge Over I-90 Will Be Replaced With New Structure

Project Expected to be Complete in Summer 2023

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the start of a $8.2 million bridge replacement project over I-90 in Onondaga County. The interchange 35 (Syracuse - East Syracuse - NY Route 298) bridge over I-90 at mile post 278.93 in Syracuse will be replaced with a new structure. Approximately 5,000 motorists travel on the bridge every day.

“The interchange 35 bridge was built in 1954 and is at the end of its useful life,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said. “This project is one of many on the Thruway to invest in our infrastructure to improve our transportation system, and keep the Thruway one of the safest super-highways in the nation.”

Motorists will continue to use the current bridge while the new structure is being built next to it. Once the new bridge is complete, traffic will be shifted onto the new structure and the old bridge will be removed.

The vertical clearance on the new structure will be raised to 16’6” from its current height of 14’1”. Additional safety upgrades include the addition of reflective line striping and the installation of new guiderail.

Economy Paving Co., Inc. of Cortland, NY was awarded the contract following a competitive bidding process. The project is expected to be complete in summer 2023.

Variable Message Signs will advise motorists of the construction work. The work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Motorists are reminded that in New York State, fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver license.
