THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES START OF $9.6 MILLION INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT ON I-87 IN ULSTER COUNTY

Project Includes Pavement Improvements and Safety Upgrades

Construction Expected to Be Complete in Fall 2022

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the start of a $9.6 million infrastructure improvement project on I-87 in Ulster County. The project includes milling and resurfacing of a seven-mile stretch of I-87 from milepost 100.8, which is just after exit 20 (Saugerties - Woodstock - NY Route 32) to milepost 93.8, which is before exit 19 (Kingston - NY Route 28 – Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge). Approximately 37,000 motorists travel on this stretch of I-87 every day.

“The I-87 corridor in the Hudson Valley is a vital corridor for travelers and the commercial trucking industry moving goods and facilitating services through New York and the east coast,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said. “This pavement improvement project ensures an improved travel experience for motorists in this area and continues to provide a safe and reliable roadway for the millions of motorists who travel on the Thruway every year.”

The project includes full-depth repairs on I-87 in both directions including the fuel service area at the Ulster Service Area (I-87 southbound, milepost 96) and the parking area located on I-87 northbound at milepost 99.2.

Safety upgrades also include reflective line striping.

Callanan Industries of Albany, NY is the project contractor. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2022.

Variable Message Signs have been illuminated to advise motorists of the construction. The work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Motorists may encounter lane closures on the Thruway along with traffic shifts and stoppages.

In New York State, fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver license.
