THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES START OF $15.5 MILLION INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN THE FINGER LAKES REGION

Project Includes Pavement and Safety Improvements on Approximately 16 Miles of Highway on I-90 in Cayuga, Seneca and Ontario Counties

Project Expected to Be Completed in Fall 2022

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced work is underway on a $15.5 million infrastructure improvement project on I-90 in Cayuga, Seneca and Ontario Counties. The project includes pavement and safety improvements on I-90 as well as the resurfacing of three bridges.

“More than 69,000 motorists travel on these two sections of the Thruway every day, and this project ensures their travels will be on a safe and reliable transportation system,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said. “This is one of several infrastructure improvement projects in our capital program which reinvests toll dollars into the system to keep the Thruway one of the safest superhighways in the country.”

The project includes milling and resurfacing a seven mile stretch from just after exit 41 (Waterloo - Clyde - NY Route 414) to just past exit 42 (Geneva - Lyons - NY Route 14). Milling and resurfacing will also take place on three bridges including the Thruway bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad (mile post 326.74), the Thruway bridge over Route 14 (mile post 326.9), and the Thruway bridge over Interchange 42 (mile post 327.1). Additional safety improvements such as new guiderail and reflective line striping will also be included on a nine mile stretch of I-90 from just after exit 40 (Weedsport - Auburn - NY Route 34) to mile post 313.8.

Rifenburg Construction, Inc. of Troy, NY was awarded the contract. The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2022.

Motorists may encounter lane closures during construction.

Variable message signs will alert motorists of the work zone and construction. Work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Motorists are reminded that in New York State, fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver license.
