THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES ENHANCEMENT OF INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS) AND
ADDITION OF LIVE CAMERA FEEDS ON THE THRUWAY’S WEBSITE AND MOBILE APP

Upgrades Give Drivers Real-Time Look at Current Traffic and Weather Conditions on 169 Cameras Along the 570-Mile Thruway System
Live Cameras Can Be Accessed on Thruway Authority’s Website and Free Mobile App

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced an enhancement of the Thruway’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and addition of live camera feeds which will provide a real-time look to drivers before traveling to their destinations, making travel smarter, faster, safer and more convenient. The enhancements also include upgrades to 169 cameras on the 570-mile Thruway system statewide.

Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said, “The Thruway Authority is focused on providing a transportation system that benefits the millions of travelers that use our roadway each year. From live traffic feeds, upgraded technology, to the recently installed Cashless Tolling system, the Thruway is modernizing the driving experience for our customers and helping travelers make smarter choices about how, when and where to travel.”

The Thruway’s ITS consists of 169 cameras located at strategic interchanges and commuter hubs along the entire Thruway system, which directly connects to New York City, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Canada.

Travelers can access the live traffic cameras on the Thruway’s Interactive Traffic Map. Live cameras will be also available in the coming weeks on the Thruway’s free mobile app which is available for download on Apple and Android devices.

The Thruway is also in the process of upgrading and replacing all 169 cameras with enhanced cameras with improved resolution. To date, 30 cameras have been replaced with another 17 scheduled to be replaced in 2021.

The ITS cameras are not to be used to collect personal identifier information. The Thruway reserves the right to deactivate the live camera feed during crashes or other emergency situations.
