TRAVEL ADVISORY: NEW JUDD ROAD BRIDGE OVER I-90 IN ONEIDA COUNTY OPENS TO TRAFFIC

New Judd Road Bridge in the Town of Whitestown Features Increased Vertical Clearance, Wider Travel Lane and Bridge Surface and Other Safety Upgrades

Project Completed Under Budget

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the reopening and substantial completion of the $5.2 million Judd Road bridge replacement project in Oneida County. The new Judd Road bridge over I-90 (mile post 240.48) in the Town of Whitestown features increased vertical clearance, wider travel lanes and other safety upgrades to the bridge that serves approximately 22,000 vehicles per day. The project began in spring 2022 and was completed under budget.

The former bridge was built in 1954 and original to the Thruway system.

The vertical clearance on the new bridge was raised to 16’8” from its previous height of 14’6” and the approaches on each end of the bridge were reconstructed to accommodate the new structure. The new bridge is also approximately ten feet wider than the former bridge. The project also included new guiderail and a new driving surface.

Tioga Construction Company Inc. from Herkimer, NY was the contractor for the project.

The average age of the Thruway’s 815 bridges is 55 years old with 75 percent of those bridges more than 60 years old. While they are continually inspected and maintained for the safety of the traveling public, more than 85 of them have been identified for replacement within the next decade.

The Authority’s approved 2023 Budget invests a total of $413 million to support its Capital Program, which is scheduled to invest $1.9 billion into capital projects through 2027. In 2022, motorists took more than 376 million trips and drove 7.7 billion miles on the Thruway system.

For up-to-date travel information, motorists are encouraged to download the Thruway Authority's mobile app which is available to download for free on iPhone and Android devices. The app provides motorists direct access to real-time traffic and navigation assistance while on the go.
