THRUWAY AUTHORITY BEGINS STAGE TWO OF $7.8 MILLION BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Project Features Replacement of Bridge Carrying Thruway (I-90) Over Flat Creek in Sprakers Which Serves More Than 24,000 Vehicles Per Day

Multi-Stage Project Maintains Two Travel Lanes in Each Direction Throughout the Duration of the Project

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the beginning of stage two of a $7.8 million bridge replacement project on the Thruway (I-90) in Montgomery County. The multi-stage project includes the replacement of the two-span bridge carrying the Thruway over Flat Creek in Sprakers, adjacent to the creek’s inlet into the Mohawk River.

“The Thruway Authority is one of the safest superhighways in the nation and we pride ourselves in delivering high levels of safety and service,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll. “By reinvesting in our roadway’s infrastructure, we are enhancing safety to this section of roadway for the thousands of drivers that travel this bridge each day.”

The bridge, located on the Thruway (I-90) between exit 28 (Fultonville – Route 30A) and 29 (Canajoharie – Route 10), was originally built in 1953 and currently serves more than 24,000 vehicles per day. When completed, the new bridge will feature numerous safety upgrades including increased shoulder widths, new guiderails and improved reflective line striping.

Stage one of the two-year project, which began in April 2018, was completed last November and included the replacement of the westbound section of I-90. During stage two, crews will replace the eastbound driving section.

Consistent with Governor Cuomo's Driver's First initiative, the project has been designed to minimize impacts to Thruway traffic. The work is being completed in stages to maintain two travel lanes in each direction throughout the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Drivers should expect minimal lane closures during the project. Motorists can find scheduled lane closures before traveling on the Thruway’s website and by using the Thruway’s free mobile app which is available on iOS and Android devices.

Motorists are encouraged to sign up for TRANSalert e-mails, which provide the latest traffic conditions along the Thruway. For up-to-date travel information, visit the Thruway Authority’s interactive Traveler Map.
