THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES WORK ON $11.1 MILLION CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT ON THE THRUWAY (I-87) AT EXIT 17 IN ORANGE COUNTY RESUMES
Two-Year Project Features Replacement of Interchange 17 (Newburgh – I-84) Bridge Over I-87 and Various Drainage Improvements to Intersection Which Serves More Than 12 Million Vehicles Per Year
Project Scheduled to be Completed by End of November

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced work on the $11.1 million capital improvement project on the Thruway (I-87) at exit 17 (Newburgh – I-84) in Orange County has resumed. The two-year project, which began in April 2018, includes the replacement of the exit 17 bridge over the Thruway and various roadway and drainage improvements to the Newburgh – I-84 interchange, which serves more than 12 million vehicles per year.

Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said, “This important infrastructure project is being completed with the millions of motorists who navigate this interchange each year in mind. By constructing the new bridge adjacent to the old structure, the exit 17 interchange remains open for the duration of the project, which will provide customers will have a safe and reliable bridge for many years to come.”

Beginning the week of Mar. 25, contractors from Kubricky Construction Corporation of Wilton, NY will begin to complete the construction of the new exit 17 interchange bridge. Once completed, all traffic will be shifted onto the new structure and crews will begin dismantling the old bridge. The traffic switch is tentatively scheduled in April, weather permitting. The new bridge structure was constructed on the south side of the old bridge, allowing traffic to remain flowing during construction. In addition to the new bridge, crews will continue reconstructing the southbound on and off-ramps and a portion of the northbound on- and off-ramps.

In addition to the bridge replacement and ramp improvements, the project also includes the construction of new bridge embankments and structures for enhanced drainage, as well as new sign structures.

During the scheduled work, motorists may encounter lane closures in the area of exit 17. Motorists should expect minimal delays through the duration of the project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. Motorists can find scheduled lane closures before traveling on the Thruway’s website and by using the Thruway’s  free mobile app which is available on iOS and Android devices.

Motorists are reminded that New York’s “Move Over” law requires drivers to use care, slow down and safely move over when approaching law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, construction and maintenance vehicles stopped along the roadway. The Thruway Authority appreciates drivers’ patience during this scheduled work and asks drivers to slow down, be alert and use caution while traveling through work zones.
