Thruway Authority to Continue Tappan Zee Bridge Deck Replacement Project

The New York State Thruway Authority announced deck replacement work on the Tappan Zee Bridge will continue this weekend, Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, and through the week of November 2, 2009.

On the evenings of Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, the Authority’s contractor will be removing one of the asphalt transition ramps on the main span, where the new bridge joint is completed.

On Monday, November 2 through Saturday, November 7, the installation of new modular joints in the main span will continue in the southbound lanes. 

All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Updates will be issued announcing any change in schedule. Lane closures during this operation:

Friday, October 30

Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of the two right northbound lanes, with an additional right northbound lane at 9:30 p.m., and another right northbound at midnight, until 8 a.m. from Interchange 8 to the east abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane northbound and two lanes southbound will be opened to traffic from midnight until 6 a.m.

During Friday night’s operations, due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Two southbound left lanes will be closed from Interchange 10 to the west abutment from 9 p.m. until 9 a.m.

These lane closures are for the removal of a steel plate system with asphalt ramps for the installation of new deck joints on the northbound main span.  All lanes are expected to be open by 9 a.m. the following day.

Saturday, October 31

Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes, with an additional right southbound lane at 11 p.m., and another right southbound lane closing at 1 a.m., until 8 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane southbound and two lanes northbound will be opened to traffic from 1 a.m. until 8 a.m.

During Saturday night’s operations, the southbound entrance at Interchange 10 will be closed and southbound traffic will be detoured on a posted detour route through Nyack to the entrance to the southbound roadway at Route 59 near Interchange 11.

Two left lanes in the northbound direction from Interchange 8 to milepost 13 will also be closed from 9 p.m. until 10 a.m. as part of this work.

Due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 9 p.m. until 10 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes, with an additional right southbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right southbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane southbound and two lanes northbound will be opened to traffic   from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the southbound lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

Thursday, November 5

Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes, with an additional right southbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right southbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane southbound and two lanes northbound will be opened to traffic   from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the southbound lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

For the safety of the public and construction workers, motorists are urged to proceed with caution and obey posted work-zone speed limits. Work will proceed weather-permitting, and schedule updates will be announced as needed.

Traffic updates will be broadcast to motorists via Dynamic Message Signs along the highway and by Highway Advisory Radio, 530 AM in the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor, as well as 1610 AM in the Newburgh area.

Weather permitting, the deck replacement project is slated for completion in the Fall of 2009.
