Thruway Authority to Continue Tappan ZeeBridge Deck Replacement Project

The New York State Thruway Authority announced that deck replacement work on the Tappan Zee Bridge will continue the week of September 28, 2009

On Monday, September 28 through Friday, October 2, the contractor will continue the installation of the main span joints in the northbound lanes. 

On Saturday, October 3 the contractor will continue the installation of the main span joints in the northbound lanes and place concrete in the southbound joints in the two right lanes at joint 173 and L44. 

All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Updates will be issued announcing any change in schedule. Lane closures during this operation:

Monday, September 28
Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right northbound lanes, with an additional right northbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right northbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge.  At least one lane northbound and two lanes southbound will be opened to traffic from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the northbound lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

During Monday night’s operations, due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Two southbound left lanes will be closed from Interchange 10 to the west abutment from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Tuesday, September 29 through Wednesday, September 30
Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right northbound lanes, with an additional right northbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right northbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge.  At least one lane northbound and two lanes southbound will be opened to traffic from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the northbound lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

During Tuesday through Wednesday night’s operations, due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Two southbound left lanes will be closed from Interchange 10 to the west abutment from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Thursday, October 1
Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right northbound lanes, with an additional right northbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right northbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane northbound and two lanes southbound will be opened to traffic from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the northbound lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

During Thursday night’s operations, due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Two southbound left lanes will be closed from Interchange 10 to the west abutment from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Friday, October 2
Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right northbound lanes, with an additional right northbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right northbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the Tappan Zee Bridge.  At least one lane northbound and two lanes southbound will be opened to traffic from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the completion of new deck panels in the northbound lanes of the main span and west deck truss. All lanes are expected to be open by 8 a.m. the following day.

During Friday night’s operations, due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 9 pm until 8 am. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Two southbound left lanes will also be closed from Interchange 10 to the west abutment from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m. Friday night as part of this work.

Saturday, October 3
Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right northbound lanes, and an additional right northbound lane closing at 12 midnight until 8 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the Tappan Zee Bridge.  In addition, the contractor will close two right lanes southbound at 1 am until 6 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the Tappan Zee Bridge.   At least one lane northbound will be open from 12 midnight till 7 a.m. and one lane southbound will be opened to traffic from 1 a.m. until 8 a.m.

These lane closures are for the completion of new bridge joints in the northbound lanes of the main span and the placement of concrete headers in the right two lanes of the southbound joints at 173 and L44.  All lanes are expected to be open by 9 a.m. the following day.

During Saturday nights’ operations, due to the southbound lane closures, the southbound entrance at Interchange 10 will be closed and southbound traffic will be detoured on a posted detour route through Nyack to the entrance to the southbound roadway at Route 59 near Interchange 11.

Due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

For the safety of the public and construction workers, motorists are urged to proceed with caution and obey posted work-zone speed limits. Work will proceed weather-permitting, and schedule updates will be announced as needed.

Traffic updates will be broadcast to motorists via Dynamic Message Signs along the highway and by Highway Advisory Radio, 530 AM in the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor, as well as 1610 AM in the Newburgh area.

Weather permitting, the deck replacement project is slated for completion in the Fall of 2009.
