Thruway Authority to Continue Tappan Zee Bridge Deck Replacement Project

The New York State Thruway Authority announced deck replacement work on the Tappan Zee Bridge will continue the week of July 27, 2009.

On Monday, July 27 through Thursday, July 30, the installation of new modular joints in the main span will continue in the northbound lanes. 

On the evenings of Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1, the Authority's contractor will be completing the installation of concrete deck panels on the main span and west deck truss of the southbound roadway.

All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Updates will be issued announcing any change in schedule. Lane closures during this operation:

Monday, July 27 through Wednesday, July 29
Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right northbound lanes, with an additional right northbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right northbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the northbound lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

Thursday, July 30
Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right northbound lanes, with an additional right northbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another right northbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the northbound lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

During Monday to Thursday night’s operations, due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Two southbound left lanes will be closed from Interchange 10 to the west abutment from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Friday, July 31
Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes, with an additional right southbound lane closing at 9:30 p.m., and another right southbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 8 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the Tappan Zee Bridge.

These lane closures are for the completion of new deck panels in the southbound lanes of the main span and west deck truss. All lanes are expected to be open by 8 a.m. the following day.

Saturday, August 1
Work will begin at 10 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes, with an additional right southbound lane closing at 11 p.m., and another right southbound lane closing at 1 a.m., until 9 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the Tappan Zee Bridge.

These lane closures are for the completion of new deck panels in the southbound lanes of the main span and west deck truss. All lanes are expected to be open by 9 a.m. the following day.

During Friday and Saturday night's operations, the southbound entrance at Interchange 10 will be closed and southbound traffic will be detoured on a posted detour route through Nyack to the entrance to the southbound roadway at Route 59 near Interchange 11.

Two left lanes in the northbound direction from Interchange 8 to milepost 13 will also be closed from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m. Friday night, and 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday night as part of this work.

For the safety of the public and construction workers, motorists are urged to proceed with caution and obey posted work-zone speed limits. Work will proceed weather-permitting, and schedule updates will be announced as needed.

Traffic updates will be broadcast to motorists via Dynamic Message Signs along the highway and by Highway Advisory Radio, 530 AM in the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor, as well as 1610 AM in the Newburgh area.

Weather permitting, the deck replacement project is slated for completion in the Fall of 2009.
