Thruway Authority to Continue Tappan Zee Bridge Deck Replacement Project

The New York State Thruway Authority announced deck replacement work on the Tappan Zee Bridge will continue the week of April 13, 2009.

On Monday, April 13 through Thursday, April 16, preparation of the deck surface for the installation of new modular joints in the main span and the west deck truss will continue.

On the evenings of Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18, the Authority’s contractor will be installing transition ramps of approximately 50 feet of asphalt leading up to steel plates on two modular joints – one located at the midpoint on the main span and one on the west deck truss of the Tappan Zee Bridge. The transition ramps will cover the entire width of the bridge at each bridge joint location and will gradually thicken until the ramp is flush with the top of the roadway plate(s). It is anticipated the asphalt ramps will provide a smooth transition over the roadway plates thereby minimizing impacts to motorists. Additionally, the ramps are to encourage drivers to continue traveling at reasonable speeds.

All work is weather-dependent and subject to change. Updates will be issued announcing any change in schedule. Lane closures during this operation:

Monday April 13 Through Wednesday, April 15

  • Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes, with an additional right southbound lane closing at 10 p.m., until 6 a.m. from Interchange 10 to the east deck truss on the Tappan Zee Bridge.
