TRAVEL ADVISORY - BUFFALO: THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF I-90 IN BOTH DIRECTIONS
BETWEEN EXIT 52A (WILLIAM ST.) AND EXIT 53 (BUFFALO – I-190) OVERNIGHT MONDAY INTO TUESDAY

Temporary Closure Due to National Grid Infrastructure Project

Detours Will Be Posted

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the temporary closure of the Thruway (I-90) in both travel directions between exit 52A (William Street) and exit 53 (Buffalo – I-190) beginning with single-lane closures on Monday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. The full closure of I-90 is scheduled for approximately midnight through 3 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22. The scheduled work and temporary closure is to support National Grid which is scheduled to make repairs to a fiber optic cable over the Thruway.

During the scheduled work, I-90 will temporarily close both east and westbound between exit 52A and exit 53, and the I-190 southbound ramp to I-90 eastbound. Detours will be posted. Travelers will encounter the following detours:

  • I-90 westbound traffic must exit at exit 52A (William Street) to Union Road (Route 277).
  • William Street ramp to I-90 west will be closed
  • I-90 eastbound traffic must exit at exit 53 (Buffalo - I-190 North).
  • I-190 southbound traffic can exit at exit 1 (South Ogden Street) where detour signs will be posted. (NOTE: If southbound traffic (looking to enter I-90 east), fails to exit at exit 1 and follow the posted detour, they will be diverted to I-90 west. No detour will be posted along I-90 west.)

Variable Message Signs have been posted to notify motorists of the scheduled closure. The National Grid work and closure is weather dependent and subject to change.
