Southbound North Grand Island Bridge to Close Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 through 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3
Southbound Traffic Will Be Shifted into Single Lane Configuration on Northbound North Grand Island Bridge

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the southbound North Grand Island Bridge on the Niagara Thruway (I-190) will close beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 through 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3.

During this scheduled work period, contractors will be using specialized equipment to grind the road surface on the bridge that will enhance safety for motorists during inclement weather. During the closure, all southbound traffic on I-190 will be shifted into a single lane configuration on the northbound North Grand Island Bridge. Overhead lane designation signals will be used to safely direct traffic over the bridge during this construction period.

The weekend closure will reduce disruptions to the public by limiting the number of nightly closures and lane shifts on the North Grand Island Bridge. Once completed, the southbound North Grand Island Bridge will receive a more uniform deck profile and a higher quality, smoother riding surface for motorists.

Work on the North Grand Island Bridge is scheduled to begin Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. with single lane closures.

All work is weather dependent.

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to consider alternate routes during the scheduled closure. Variable Message Signs (VMS) are illuminated to advise motorists of stoppages. Motorists are urged to be alert and follow the posted work zone speed limits.

The Thruway Authority encourages motorists to download its mobile app which is available to download for free on iPhone and Android devices. The app provides motorists direct access to real-time traffic and navigation assistance while on the go.

Motorists can also sign up for TRANSalert e-mails, which provide the latest traffic conditions along the Thruway.

The Authority appreciates motorists’ patience and understanding while this important improvement project takes place.
