THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES WEEKEND CLOSURE OF NORTHBOUND NORTH GRAND ISLAND BRIDGE
Bridge to Close Beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 Through 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2 for Bridge Improvement Project
All Northbound Traffic Will Be Shifted to Southbound Span
The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the weekend closure of the northbound North Grand Island Bridge on the Niagara Thruway (I-190) beginning Friday, Sept. 29 at 8:30 p.m. through 6:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2. The closure is part of an $8.4 million deck overlay improvement project which began in June.
During this scheduled work period, contractors will apply the final polyester concrete overlay to the bridge surface. All northbound traffic on I-190 will be shifted into a single lane configuration on the southbound North Grand Island Bridge. Overhead lane designation signals will be used to safely direct traffic over the bridge during the scheduled closure.
This weekend closure will decrease the number of nightly closures and lane shifts on the Niagara Thruway (I-190), which minimizes traffic disruptions while providing a safer experience for the traveling public. Additionally, the closure will allow the workers to perform one continuous pour, which provides a more uniform deck profile and a higher quality, smoother riding surface for motorists once completed.
The contractor, Oakgrove Construction, will be performing the work on this $8.4 million project. Overall, the project includes partial-depth repairs to the concrete deck, partial-depth concrete fascia repairs, removal of existing joints and installation of new joints and pouring a new polyester concrete overlay on the bridge deck.
All work is weather dependent.
