The repairs are necessary following an accident which occurred on July 11 when the exit 53 overpass was hit by a vehicle trailering a large excavator traveling southbound on I-190 to I-90 eastbound. The damage to the overhead bridge was severe. A local contractor with support from Thruway maintenance staff made temporary repairs to the overhead bridge and this scheduled work will complete permanent repairs.

The following closures are necessary to allow the permanent repairs to safely occur:

During peak hours, the average commuter traffic in the area is roughly 2,400 vehicles/hour. In an effort to minimize impacts for motorists, the scheduled closures will take place during non-peak travel times where traffic has an average of 600 vehicles/hour.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) across the region and Highway Advisory Radio 530 AM will advise motorists about the upcoming closures and expected delays. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid travel in this area during this time.

In case of inclement weather, the work will be postponed until Friday, December 2 with completion by Monday, December 5.
