Construction projects will be suspended on the New York State Thruway and safe driving enforcement efforts will be in place throughout the Fourth of July holiday period, the Thruway Authority announced today.

“I urge all New Yorkers on the road during the holiday period to make safety a part of their travel plans,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J. Madison said. “The Thruway Authority will help ease the way for motorists by suspending construction over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.”

“The Thruway Authority advocates Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s ‘Drivers First’ initiative, announced in 2012, ensuring that disruptions are as minimal as possible to drivers at highway and bridge projects statewide,” added Madison.

Construction will be suspended from noon Friday, June 28 through 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 8 from Exit 29A (Little Falls) to Exit 44 (Canandaigua) on I-90.

During the holiday period, contractors will only be allowed to perform work that will not be disruptive or a distraction to Thruway traffic.

All 27 travel plazas along the Thruway will be open regular hours for the Fourth of July holiday. For a listing of the travel plazas and amenities, please visit the Thruway Authority’s website at

During last year’s Fourth of July holiday travel period (Saturday, June 30, 2012 to Sunday, July 8, 2012), more than 6.5 million vehicles traveled more than 216 million miles on the Thruway.
