Thruway Traffic Pattern Change Between Exits 24 and 23
on I-87 in Albany

Motorists traveling south on the New York State Thruway (I-87) in the Albany area will encounter a traffic pattern change beginning Tuesday, November 20 as the second year of a three-year project to add additional travel lanes concludes, the Thruway Authority announced.

On Tuesday afternoon, all southbound traffic between Exit 24 (I-87/Adirondack Northway, I-90) and Exit 23 (I-787) will be diverted to pavement located on the newly-constructed southbound side of the highway. In order to streamline the project and help keep costs down, the new southbound roadway will be comprised of two lanes that will already be configured as necessary for the final phase of the project commencing in spring 2013.

From now through the winter months, northbound traffic will remain on the northbound side, and the concrete barriers that have been used to separate northbound and southbound lanes will be removed.

When highway reconstruction resumes in 2013, all northbound traffic will be diverted across the median near exit 23 to continue north on the newly-constructed southbound roadway. Concrete barriers will again separate the lanes traveling in opposite directions.

When the project is completed, there will be three travel lanes in both directions between exits 23 and 24. The $99.7 million project is being constructed by Rifenburg Construction Inc. of Troy, and is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2013.

Motorists will be informed about the traffic pattern change on Tuesday via electronic message signs along the highway and by Highway Advisory Radio broadcasts on 1610 AM.
